3 Ways to Relieve Constipation

Constipation can be incredibly uncomfortable and frustrating. It’s a common issue that most people experience at some point, especially when transitioning from a typical diet to a cleaner, gut-friendly eating regimen. Your body might not be accustomed to the sudden increase in fiber and nutrient-dense foods, leading to temporary constipation. Don’t worry – this is a normal part of the adjustment process, and there are natural remedies to help you through it. Here are three effective ways to relieve constipation naturally while your digestive system adapts to your new, healthier lifestyle.

Lemon Water

Freshly squeezed lemon juice is a simple yet powerful remedy for constipation. Lemons are rich in enzymes and have a high acidity level, which can help stimulate your digestive system and get things moving. Increasing your water intake is already a well-known remedy for constipation, but adding lemon juice enhances the effect. The citric acid in lemons can help flush out toxins from the digestive tract and stimulate bile production, which can help relieve constipation.

How to Use: Squeeze the juice of half a lemon into a glass of warm water and drink it first thing in the morning on an empty stomach. This will help jumpstart your digestive system for the day ahead. You can also sip on lemon water throughout the day for added hydration and digestive support.

Senna Tea

Senna is a powerful herbal laxative that works exceptionally well for short-term relief of constipation. It is so effective that it’s often used as a preparation before medical procedures like colonoscopies. The active compounds in senna, called sennosides, irritate the lining of the intestines, causing them to contract and help move stool through the bowels.

However, because of its potency, senna should only be used for short-term relief. Over-reliance on senna or any laxative can lead to dependency, where your body becomes reliant on external aid to have a bowel movement. So while senna is an effective remedy for occasional constipation, it’s important not to use it too frequently.

How to Use: Steep  a senna tea bag in hot water for 10 minutes, then drink. It’s best to take it in the evening, as it usually takes 6 to 12 hours to work. Be mindful of dosage instruction and consult a healthcare provider if you have any concerns.

Flax Tea

Flax seeds are among the best natural remedies for constipation due to their high mucilage content. Mucilage is a gel-like substance that provides a soothing and lubricating effect on the colon and intestinal lining, making it easier for stool to pass. In addition to mucilage, flax seeds are rich in fiber and omega-3 fatty acids, making them a wholesome alternative to commercial constipation supplements.

Whole flax seeds are pretty much useless for this purpose, as they pass through the digestive system without breaking down. The magic happens when you grind them into powder and mix them with water. It’s crucial to use freshly ground flax seeds because the oils in flax are prone to oxidation and can go rancid quickly.

How to Make Flax Tea: Grind 1 tablespoon of flax seeds into a fine powder. Mix the ground flax with 1 cup of warm (not hot) water. You can add a squeeze of lemon and a drizzle of honey to enhance the flavor. Drink this mixture once a day to help relieve constipation and support regular bowel movements.
